What To Look For In A Beginner Drone

Don’t get blinded by specs. Here’s what actually matters when choosing your first drone.

Weight Class

Under 250g is simpler, but not registration-free. Drones 100g+ need a Flyer ID, and with a camera, an Operator ID too. Under 100g needs neither, though the CAA recommends a Flyer ID.

→ Look for sub-250g to keep it simple

Obstacle Sensing

Sensors that detect and stop the drone before it hits trees, walls, or cables. Essential for beginners flying in complex environments.

→ Forward + downward sensors as a minimum

Flight Time

More battery life means more time to practise. Anything under 15 minutes will feel frustrating. Aim for 25 minutes or more.

→ 25–35 minutes is the sweet spot

Signal Range

A strong controller link means the drone won’t disconnect when it drifts further away.

→ Keep in mind distance for stable signal

Camera Stabilisation

A mechanical 3-axis gimbal gives far smoother footage than electronic stabilisation (EIS). Your shots will look professional from day one.
