The DJI Matrice 5TD is the multi-sensor aircraft designed for DJI Dock 4. It combines three visible-light cameras, native 1280 × 1024 thermal imaging and a laser rangefinder in an aircraft built for remotely managed inspections and response missions.
Its appeal is the range of evidence a team can collect on one flight. You can establish the wider scene, examine a distant detail and check a thermal view without changing aircraft. Here is what UK buyers need to know about the camera system, flight performance and role of the dock.
What is the DJI Matrice 5TD designed for
The Matrice 5TD operates as part of the Dock 4 system, which keeps the aircraft on site and handles battery swaps between missions. That suits work where the same location needs frequent coverage or a team needs aerial information in response to an event.
Potential applications include thermal asset inspection, perimeter monitoring and emergency response. The useful question is what evidence your team needs to collect, at what distance and how often. Those answers determine the sensor settings, routes and operating plan.
The Matrice 5TD camera system explained
Wide and medium telephoto cameras
The 50 MP wide-angle camera provides scene context, using a 1/0.98-inch sensor and a 23.5 mm equivalent focal length. The 50 MP medium-telephoto camera provides a 3× view with a 70 mm equivalent focal length.
For an infrastructure inspection, the wide view can show the asset and its surroundings before the operator moves to a closer view. Keeping that context with the detailed evidence helps the person reviewing the inspection understand where a finding sits.
Super telephoto camera
The 50 MP super-telephoto camera has a 252 mm equivalent focal length and an 11× telephoto view. DJI lists up to 176× hybrid zoom, which combines optical magnification with digital processing. The maximum hybrid figure should not be treated as 176× optical zoom.
The telephoto camera uses an RYYB sensor to support imaging in low light. Actual identification performance depends on the target, lighting, movement and atmospheric conditions, so a demonstration should use examples close to your intended work.
Native thermal imaging
The Matrice 5TD thermal camera captures at a native resolution of 1280 × 1024. Super-resolution processing can produce a 2560 × 2048 output. These are different specifications: native resolution describes the sensor image, while the larger output includes processing.
Thermal imagery can help an operator find temperature patterns for closer assessment, such as an area of an electrical installation that appears different from comparable components. Interpretation still requires the right inspection method; a thermal image alone does not establish the cause of a fault.
Laser rangefinder
DJI lists a maximum laser range of 3,000 metres at 25% target reflectivity. A range measurement can add distance context to an observation and help teams communicate the location of a target. Performance depends on the target and conditions; the specification is separate from the aircraft’s flight range.
DJI Matrice 5TD specifications at a glance
| Specification | DJI Matrice 5TD |
| Compatible dock | DJI Dock 4 |
| Visible-light cameras | Three 50 MP cameras with 1×, 3× and 11× views |
| Maximum hybrid zoom | 176× |
| Native thermal resolution | 1280 × 1024 |
| Processed thermal output | Up to 2560 × 2048 |
| Laser rangefinder | Up to 3 km at 25% target reflectivity |
| Maximum flight time | 59 minutes |
| Maximum hover time | 55 minutes |
| Payload capacity | 450 g |
| Protection and temperature | IP55 and -40°C to 50°C |
These are manufacturer-stated figures. Flight time, imaging results and accessory combinations should be assessed for the intended mission.
Flight time and readiness between missions
DJI quotes up to 59 minutes of flight time and 55 minutes of hovering. A working mission also needs time to reach the target, complete the task and return with the required reserve. Wind and fitted accessories can reduce useful time on task.
Dock 4 handles the next part of the workflow. It can swap in a charged battery while depleted batteries recharge in its compartment. DJI separates the swap stage, at less than 25 seconds, from full operational turnaround, at less than 45 seconds. The system still needs a battery with sufficient charge ready for the next flight.
Obstacle sensing and safety equipment
The aircraft integrates colour vision, LiDAR, 3D infrared and millimetre-wave sensing. These systems support flight awareness and obstacle sensing; the LiDAR is not a surveying payload for collecting a mapping point cloud.
The independent flight termination system is built into the airframe. The AP1 parachute is a separately mounted component, so its inclusion should be confirmed for your package. DJI lists a minimum parachute deployment height of 35 metres above ground and replacement after deployment. These conditions need to fit the operating plan.
For UK operations in the Specific category, the CAA requires operational authorisation. Aircraft safety features are one part of assessing the proposed operation.
AI tools and mission accessories
DJI’s launch material lists onboard recognition for 17 target types, including people, vehicles, smoke, fire and selected animals. Recognition can help direct an operator’s attention during a mission, with findings checked before action is taken.
Accessory options include the AL2 Spotlight and AS2 Speaker. A spotlight may support observation in low light, while a speaker can support communication with people on the ground. Confirm approved combinations, mounting and total mass within the aircraft’s payload allowance.
Can the Matrice 5TD use a remote controller
The Matrice 5TD is designed around Dock 4 operation. DJI’s supplied roadmap schedules RC Plus 2 emergency-controller support for late October 2026. Check the released firmware and supported functions before including controller operation in your plan.
Teams needing regular standalone manual flying should make that requirement clear when comparing aircraft. Emergency controller support and a normal field-deployed workflow should be assessed separately.

The Matrice 5TD adds higher native thermal resolution, a longer telephoto focal length and integration with Dock 4 battery swapping. Read our DJI Matrice 5TD vs Matrice 4TD comparison to assess the upgrade against your current work.
Its LiDAR forms part of the sensing system. It should not be specified as a survey LiDAR payload. Define the required survey output before selecting equipment.
