How was it done before drones?

Before the introduction of the DJI Matrice 300 RTK's, emergency services like Norfolk Fire & Rescue faced significant challenges. Without the bird's-eye view that drones provide, they had to rely on ground-level assessments, which could be time-consuming, less accurate, and often riskier. The inability to quickly identify heat pockets in moorland fires or locate individuals in dense smoke or obscured areas meant that response times were longer, and the potential for human risk was higher

What are the benefits of drones?

Rapid Response

Perry Smith, Technical Support Officer at Norfolk Fire & Rescue, recounted an incident where drone technology was pivotal in locating a lost elderly man in the marshes. The police helicopter had failed to find him, but with the drone's assistance, they quickly located and saved the manh

Informed Decision Making

The thermal imaging capability also means that firefighters can quickly identify hazards, such as gas cylinders at risk of exploding, and locate individuals obscured by smoke, flames, or smog. This immediate access to critical information ensures that rescue operations are both swift and safe.

Enhanced Safety

Drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras, like the DJI Zenmuse H20T, have been instrumental in identifying heat pockets below extinguished regions of moorland fires, ensuring that firefighters are aware of potential flare-ups.

Collaborative Operations:

The flexibility of drone technology means that Norfolk Fire & Rescue can collaborate more effectively with other emergency services like the police during the search for the elderly man.

“We were quite concerned because an elderly man had been missing for a long time in the marshes. The police helicopter was deployed, and it couldn’t locate the man in the marsh. We worked together with the police to deploy our drones, and shortly after, had spotted the man in a body of water. The police suspected that the man would have been up to his chest in water, and if he wasn’t found quick, something fatal could have happened.

What Solution Was Used?

The DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced is a portable game-changer for mobile operations. Its features, including a 640 x 512px thermal camera, 48MP zoom, and a 32-minute flight time, empower teams to provide crucial aerial insights swiftly. Especially noteworthy is its thermal imaging capability, which proves invaluable during nighttime operations
