Understanding How LiDAR Technology Works

The First Step in LiDAR Technology

LiDAR systems emit rapid pulses of laser light at a target area. These lasers, which are usually in the near-infrared spectrum, are generated by a high-precision laser source within the LiDAR equipment.

Capturing Essential Surface Data

After the laser light hits the target surface, it is reflected back towards the LiDAR system. This reflection is critical as it carries essential data about the object or area that was hit by the laser pulse.

Time-of-Flight: Measuring Distances with Precision

LiDAR calculates the time it takes for each laser pulse to return after hitting the target. This measurement, known as time-of-flight, is used to determine the distance between the LiDAR sensor and the target object, giving an accurate location point.

From Point Clouds to 3D Models: The Final Transformation in LiDAR

The LiDAR system compiles all the return time data to create a detailed set of points, known as a point cloud. This point cloud is then used to generate a three-dimensional model of the scanned area, providing detailed and accurate topographical data.
