When the original Mavic drone was launched back in 2016, it was marketed as a high-end consumer drone. But the platform’s ease of use, extensive payload options and affordability meant it found popularity in a number of industries including construction, surveying and search and rescue.
So when DJI launched the updated Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro drones in August 2018, it was a surprise to some that they did not include more commercial functionality. Because while both the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom are very capable drones, they are still only high-end consumer drones.
But with its latest release, DJI aims to fill the gap. The Mavic 2 Enterprise edition, launched at DJI AirWorks in Dallas on October 29th, comes with a raft of upgrades over the Mavic 2 which are aimed at increasing its capabilities in the enterprise sector.

Mavic 2 Enterprise accessories
The Mavic 2 Enterprise edition is based on the Mavic 2 Zoom platform and comes equipped with the same 12-megapixel camera with 3x digital and 2x optical zoom. But it also comes with three accessories which increase the capabilities of the drone significantly.
These accessories include:
- Spotlight 2400 lumen: Dual top-mounted lights which provide increased luminosity, allowing operators to carry out missions at night or in low-light-level conditions safely. These are ideal for search and rescue operations along with building inspection applications.
- Speaker 100db: Loudspeakers which allow up to 10 custom commands to be projected up to 1m. This provides another communications channel to individuals and is ideal for search and rescue or police applications.
- Anti-collision beacon: The M2E beacon is a bright flashing strobe light which is visible for up to three miles. This increases safety during missions carried out in low-light-levels and provides additional awareness in congested airspace.
Mavic 2 Enterprise features
In addition to new accessories, the Mavic 2E edition comes with a number of software upgrades which are designed to increase the performance and operating capabilities of the drone. Enhancements include:
Self-heating batteries: Helps to prevent battery faults in low-temperature conditions. This is ideal for search and rescue operations.
24 GB onboard storage: Increased onboard storage allows longer mission times where data has to be captured and stored.
GPS timestamping: Improved GPS timestamping encodes the date, time and location of every image. This aids pilot accountability and ensures data captured by the drone can be used as evidence in legal proceedings.
Local data mode: Once activated, this prevents user data being transmitted over the internet. Any data transmitted to the drone is also encrypted, providing added security assurances for the operator.
Airsense technology: Automatically alerts pilots about the presence of nearby aircraft. This is useful in areas of congested airspace or in applications where other aircraft are in operation, such as wildfire fighting and search and rescue.
Improved obstacle avoidance APAS: The improved FlightAutomony system of the Mavic 2 Enterprise incorporates data from eight onboard vision sensors and two infrared sensors. This allows the Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) to sense and automatically avoid obstacles both in front & behind the drone, and also if the drone is flying sidewards. This is particularly important for pilots flying in high obstacle areas or over rugged terrain.
Mavic 2 Enterprise commercial applications
With these updates and accessories, the Mavic 2 Enterprise edition is the perfect drone for a number of commercial applications. We have highlighted which industries and applications will benefit most from the new features.
Search and rescue:ย With its self-heating batteries, onboard loudspeaker and 2400 lumen spotlight, the Mavic 2 Enterprise edition is the perfect search and rescue drone. The compact frame of the Mavic 2 also allows it to be transported to site and deployed quickly. Airsense technology also allows it to operate safely in conjunction with other aircraft, such as Coast Guard search and rescue aircraft.
Infrastructure inspection: The easy-to-fly characteristics of the Mavic 2 combined with the 2400 lumen spotlight make this a compelling drone for infrastructure inspection. The compact frame is small enough to get into hard to reach spaces, while the spotlight allows engineers to inspect dimly lit areas with ease.
Fire service: The Mavic 2 Enterprise edition should help give incident command officers the information they need to fight fires more effectively. The spotlight and loudspeaker functionalities are useful assets to help identify and aid casualties. The APAS obstacle avoidance system allows drones to be flown over built-up areas safely. Airsense technology can also help keep drones safe during incidents which may involve other emergency service drones.
Police: Police forces across the country now have access to a powerful capable drone to help them search for missing persons and fight crime. The spotlight can be used to help find casualties and perpetrators, while the loudspeaker can be used to provide warnings to the public and aid in emergency response efforts.
A very capable drone at an affordable price
With these new updates, DJI is clearly making a statement here. The Enterprise edition provides a range of features that both the inspection and emergency services will find compelling. In both cases, these industries have had to make do with drones designed for other sectors. For the first time, they have a drone with features designed specifically for them. And whatโs more, it comes at a very affordable price.
