A Closer Look at DJI’s AeroScope

    The DJI AeroScope is groundbreaking technology. Drones are on the up, and it’s expected by the year 2020 there’ll be over 20 billion in the air. So as you can imagine, the threat of drones is naturally on the up as well, and the needs for drone security heightens.     What is the AeroScope?

    DJI launched the AeroScope to be a purpose-built drone detection system that allows the operator to easily track telemetry data from DJI aircraft in surrounding airspace within a radius of up to 20km. It’s in effect, a drone license plate detection system, as well as a data provider.

    So how does the AeroScope actually work? It intercepts the communications link between a DJI drone and its remote controller.

    AeroScope is able to detect real-time identification information from following:

    • UAV serial code
    • Make and model
    • UAV position
    • Speed
    • Latitude
    • Ground controller location

    This allows the controller to take mitigating action against the threat of the drone, and at the same time be able to dispatch law enforcement if necessary. The system provides you with an unrivalled detection range that can exceed 40 km due to the unique way it digitally decodes signals between the drone and the controller.

    Static and Portable DJI AeroScope

    Deployment time: The portable unit can be instantly deployed on site, making it incredibly transportable. The stationary unit, on the other hand, can take from half a day to several days, all depending on the configuration.

    Coverage: It is hard to increase the coverage of the portable AeroScope. It has a range of around 5km, which is still very impressive for a portable device. The stationary unit’s coverage can be increased. This is achieved by using the high gain directional antenna, as well as the multiple stationary units in multiple sites.

    Usage Restriction: The portable unit is restricted by the battery, as well as things like the weather and the user. The static unit, however, is an all-weather unattended service.

    Typical Scenarios for use: The portable unit is typically used for urgent temporary meetings and events with no time or place to prepare. It’s also used on the move, as well as for mobile monitoring.

    What else does the Stationary Device offer? It is very flexible for different coverage, as well as different server deployment. The detection range has the ability to reach up to 70km.

    The stationary unit has the ability to be used at a temporary event and mobile situations, providing there is enough time set aside for set up.

    The static Aeroscope also houses a pretty impressive back-end server. This allows you to monitor real-time images, as well as flight historical data retrieve and playback.

    So, what does it need to work? Unlike the portable unit, the AeroScope stationary unit needs to work with a server, as well as a network. This comes through both a wireless network and the AeroScope server and ends with the results reaching the terminal.

    Portable Device Features:

    How does it work? The portable DJI AeroScope uses an active antenna that contains active electronic components such as transistors or amplifiers. This is as opposed to most antennas which only consist of passive components such as metals rods, capacitors and conductors.

    The portable device is easily transportable and is ideal for urgent temporary meetings, or for events with very little time to prepare or for setup. The battery and the weather may serve as a small restriction at times. If the weather is poor, the portable AeroScope may struggle to function normally.

    The coverage is up to 5km, however, it is difficult to increase it beyond that.
